French Wines - Bordeaux

French Wines - Bordeaux

Situated in the west of France, Bordeaux encompasses a number of wine growing areas. The vast majority of wines produced in these areas are red wines made mainly with a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties but can also include Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère varieties.

The region of Bordeaux is naturally separated by the Gironde Estuary, creating two distinct areas, the Left and Right Bank.

The Left Bank encompasses the wine regions of the Médoc and Graves, with notable sub-regions including Pauillac, Margaux and Sauternes. The Right Bank contains the Libournais region with notable sub-regions including Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.

Further inland between Bordeaux's two main rivers is the Entre-Deux-Mers area, which is best known for its white wines made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle.

Bordeaux produces historically significant wines, containing blends that are replicated the world over. We regularly feature Bordeaux wine in our online auctions, take a look below at just a few of the notable wineries in this area.

Notable Bordeaux Wineries

Château Margaux - One of the most iconic wineries in the world, Château Margaux has been at the forefront of the wine industry since its foundation in 16th Century and even more so since its placement within the top rung of French wines in Napoleon's 1855 Classification.

Château d'Yquem - One of the world’s most-prized and enviable wines, Château d’Yquem is Sauternes’ only classified Premier-Cru-Supérieur, produced from a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the most incredible sweet wine.

Château Lafite-Rothschild - This highly-acclaimed estate in the appellation of Pauillac, was one of only four to be granted First-Growth (1er Cru) status in the original publication of the famous 1855 Classification of Médoc. Of the wines of Pauillac, this is arguably the most sought after.

Château Mouton-Rothschild - One of the great Bordeaux wine estates.  In spite of its prominence, the estate was listed as only a 2nd-Growth in the famed 1855 Classification of Médoc - an injustice that was finally confirmed with their promotion to the exclusive rank of 1st-Growth in 1973.
